Newsletter October 30 & November 6

And God said… ‘Let there be a Light… Party’!

October 30 & November 6

Kia Ora and Welcome

Thank you to all those who helped make the 150th such a great weekend. There is an insert outlining all the great work that was done inside this newsletter.

Stretching into our 151st year, I am very aware of the importance of our prayer momentum and our unity. The Spirit of God throughout history has worked through churches that pray together and work hard for real unity. Not cheap superficial prayer and unity but hard-won honest prayer together and unity built on vulnerability and honesty. If you are part of a prayer group or a pray–er who would like to link in to a fortnightly update of prayer concerns and issues in the church, please send me an email (ajamieson@swbc.org.nz). I’ll email you a list of current prayer concerns once a fortnight for the remainder of the year.

The graph inside the newsletter shows a drop in general giving in September. This is understandable with our global focus that month but also concerning. We’d love your prayer and continued financial support as the year starts to draw to a close.

On Monday night (October 31) we are again hosting the Light Party at Halswell Domain. Thanks to everyone who has made this such a great event in the past and thank you to those helping this year. It is a great family evening.

We’ve had several times of combined prayer and conversation together with Hope Presbyterian Church around how we can collaborate in our shared mission to the South West of Christchurch. This is an exciting way for us to work across denominational and church boundaries. We are committed to keeping these conversations and times of prayer going in the hope of greater collaboration in 2017.

This weekend I’m away on camp with a group from the Hoon Hay Community.

Grace and peace,
Alan

GLOBAL MISSION
CHAD

Chad is coming to the end of the rainy season, which has been good this year and people are hopeful of a good harvest. This is necessary as Chad has many extra people to feed – around 400000 refugees are living in Chad, fleeing militants and wars in surrounding countries. Please pray for these refugees, that they would have enough to survive, and that they would find peace and safety in Chad. Pray for an end to wars and violence in the Central African region.

Diane Goodman is living in Chad, working with a people group in the south of Chad, developing written materials in the local language with a team. Now that the rains have eased, she will travel out to the villages taking copies of literacy materials (beginner readers) and newly translated portions of Scripture to test. This month she will also be working with her local colleague on translating the book of Luke.

Pray for the people of Chad – for the moving of God’s Spirit amongst them to call many to Himself. Pray that his light would shine in their hearts revealing who He is and who Christ is.

Men’s Breakfast November 12. Tickets available from Info Centre on Sundays or Reception during the week. Our next Discovery Lunch is on November 6. Contact Si Hart to register. Come along and pray for our people on November 14 from 7.30pm in the Hub Cafe.

Newsletter October 2 & 9

Fun, Food, Family and Friends! See you all there!

October 2 & 9

Kia ora and welcome

This morning I want to join Paul in his letter to the ancient church of Ephesus in praying for you that –“I pray that out of his glorious riches he (God the Father) may strengthen you with power through his Spirit in your inner being.” To be strengthened in our inner being is one of the great promises of the gospel and one of our deepest needs. This strengthening is a gift of the Spirit in response to humble prayer. May you know this inner strength this week.

Our 150th celebration is fast approaching. Please invite people to the street party (5pm on October 15) and get tickets for the Sunday services (October 16). We will have a cake cutting and morning tea at 10.30am that Sunday. Please invite family, friends and neighbours to the celebrations across the weekend. Two weeks after our 150th we are running the annual Light Party in Halswell Domain (October 31), a very popular event.

With the number of events in the final months of this year and all we have planned for 2017, we have decided not to have a big church summer camp over Waitangi weekend.

Promised global giving is encouraging for the year ahead. We have received 275 global giving commitments (up from 242 last year). The total committed giving is $518,000. Thank you on behalf of our people overseas and those they are working with. If you filled out a commitment form for the first time and want to know how you can make payments to our global work please see the people at the information centre. If you haven’t made a global commitment for the year ahead, you still can.

May you know God’s strengthening in your inner being and may that strength speak to others.

Alan

PAPUA NEW GUINEA
Papua New Guinea has over 800 different people groups. The isolation created by the mountainous terrain is so great that some groups, until recently, were unaware of the existence of neighboring groups only a few kilometers away. The diversity, reflected in a folk-saying, “For each village, a different culture”, is perhaps best shown in the local languages. Only about 350-450 of the language groups in PNG are related.
The remainder of the Papuan languages seem to be totally unrelated either to each other or to the other major groupings. Although the majority of people groups in PNG identify as Christian, there is still a huge task for those working in PNG to communicate the good news of Jesus to the different language groups in a way that makes sense in their own distinct culture.Phil and Chris Carr work in the Bamu river area, translating scripture with the help of 2 local partners. At present they are working on Hebrews and 1 Corinthians. Pray for wisdom for them all as they translate, and that the words of Scripture would bring wisdom, hope and unity to those on the Bamu river.

Newsletter August 21 & 28

Calling all earthlings! Advent Calendars for 2016 are landing soon!

August 21 & 28

Kia ora and welcome,

The 150th celebrations are just around the corner, on the weekend of October 14 – 16. We have different things planned across the weekend, all are free and a great opportunity for us to come together. More details are on the website. To help cover the cost of the weekend we’d appreciate donations. In the past we have been able to do conferences and special events like this for free and trusted that people will contribute as they are able to.

The consent to operate our café space as a commercial café has been in with the council for a month now. As is common in the consent process, they have come back and asked for more details which we have provided. Thank you to everyone who has helped facilitate hospitality in  the café space this year, to our regulars who bring food, to home groups and local communities who are serving on Sundays and especially to Pam Arnold who has anchored hospitality on Sunday mornings. Getting consent is just one step in the process of discerning what this café space becomes. At the moment we are sensing a ‘living room’ type feel for our café space going forward. Please continue to pray for this and we will update you as things unfold.

Discussions around the potential partnership with Wigram primary school and the building of the school hall are going well. I anticipate an evening to outline, talk and pray about this soon. With this in mind, our recent prayer bus night and global missions week coming, we are going to postpone the church prayer meeting that was planned for August 31.

This Sunday morning we’re going to start with short statements of thanks to God. If you’d like to send one to me, please email me at ajamieson@swbc.org.nz by Saturday night.

Grace and peace,
Alan

GLOBAL PRAYER FOCUS
THAILAND

Earlier this month, Thailand had a referendum that has brought in a new constitution. Some are concerned that the new constitution will entrench the power of the ruling military government and increase divisions. Following the constitution there was a series of bomb blasts across the country in tourist areas, leaving four dead and many wounded. This week there have been further bomb blasts. No one is sure if these are designed to cause disruption or if they are part of a long-running insurgency from a Muslim group in the South of Thailand.Pray for a government that would care for the poor and the forgotten. Pray that there would be leaders who would seek unity for the country. Pray for those who feel they have no voice in the country – that there would be leaders who would want to seek them out and listen.Pete and Lynley work with a community in the Northeast of Thailand – an area far from major tourist or political centres. As they walk alongside people and help in practical ways, they are able to see lives changed and hope coming in an area of significant poverty. Pray for the small group of Christians in the area, that God would strengthen them and that their numbers would grow. Pray that the community would thrive – in particular that rain would come and the crops would grow.

Start saving your gold coins for our Global Night Market, September 3. Check out what we’ve got planned for Global Missions Week! Come and hear Sarah talk about her work in Kolkata, September 5.

August 7 & 14

Kia Ora and Welcome

Thanks to everyone who organised The Mystery Prayer Bus event and to everyone who came. The buses had different routes and we prayed for the different needs of each community, as well as places where people from SWBC are connecting in and at work. It was good to have so many people travelling together and praying for different aspects of our wider South West community.

Last Sunday I gave a brief verbal update about a potential partnership with what will be Wigram Primary School. I have written more about this on my blogsite and included responses to some of the questions you may have.

Welcome to Chris Clarke on Sunday August 7 and Wayne and Libby Huirua on Sunday August 14. The Huirua’s speciality is leading worship. The CLT and I have shared a hunch that ‘worship will lead us’. At a recent meeting of local community leaders I expanded that sense by suggesting ‘worship will lead us and prayer will sustain us’. As I pray about what God is bringing to life in our midst I carry a deep sense that this is true. Ironically, when we asked people in local communities and life groups to reflect on their own relationship with God, it was in the areas of worship and prayer that people indicated they struggled most. It is timely that we can spend a few Sundays absorbed in worship, as we are focusing on our local mission and will soon focus on global mission (September 3 – 11).

As many of you are aware the Elders have prayerfully set a couple of financial targets for us. The first is to see monthly offerings above $145,000 per month and the second is for a 5% cut in expenditure. In June the spending was 12% below budget and our July offerings were $146,496. Thank you to God and everyone who so faithfully gives to the life of the church. Thank you.

Grace and peace  Alan

New Worship Series starts Sunday August 14. Pick up the Worship Daily readings this Sunday from the Info Centre or visit the website. August 14 is our next Discovery Lunch for those who are new. The above graph shows a very positive trend in our financial giving. July giving of $146,496 was above the monthly target set by Elders and almost at budget. Praise the Lord!

GLOBAL PRAYER FOCUS
CHINA

Pray for China as it is currently undergoing a shift towards more repression – this has included arrests of human rights activists and lawyers, persecution of Christians and increased oppression of Buddhist and Muslim groups.Since Xi came to power, China’s situation has become more and more worrisome, says Murong Xuecun, a prominent author and commentator. “Things that we could openly discuss before, such as the Cultural revolution, are now considered sensitive or even forbidden. In the past there was some room for non-governmental organisations and rights lawyers. Now all of them have been suppressed.” (Financial Times. July 27, 2016)Pray for President Xi and the other leaders in China. Pray they would be concerned with the good of all they lead, even if it means loosening their grip on power.Christians are facing more scrutiny and there has been an increase in arrests of pastors and church members throughout  the country. A Pastor who has previously been detained asks for prayer for persecuted Christians “to be endowed with confidence, tenderness, eloquence and a loving heart so that they may defend their faith”. (Christianity Today, 2 August, 2016).

Have your registered for the ‘Adventures of the Mystery Prayer Bus’?

July 24 & 31

Kia ora and welcome

Well, the school holidays are almost over and a new term beckons. For parents, kids and school staff we pray Term 3 will go well.

Many of us farewelled Doreen Cullen at her memorial service on Saturday July 16. Doreen and Bill were very much part of the church family. They were inspiring missionaries who worked for many years in remote parts of Papua New Guinea and always returned with vivid stories and encouragement for the church. Doreen will be sadly missed by family and the many, many people she influenced.

Speaking of missions, a group of our young people are going on a Global Exposure trip to Kolkata at the end of the year. They are fundraising in the café. You can enjoy a good coffee, bacon buttie or a bowl of chips, knowing that they’ll be a step closer to experiencing poverty and mission in the third world. Free food and drinks are available alongside the items for sale after the morning services.

‘Local Missions Week’ starts on July 31 with Sam and Thelma Chapman joining us. They will be with us at all services and run a workshop from 3pm – 5pm on ‘Engaging with Your Neighbourhood’. On Wednesday evening the ‘Mystery Prayer’ buses will be departing after a fish and chip dinner and Chris Clarke will be with us on August 7. Over Local Missions Week you can also pick up ‘The Local Rag’, a zine designed to share stories from our neighbourhood communities. There are some great articles from our people about our places.

Finally, the SYC Quiz Night is on Saturday July 30. Get your team together and buy your tickets for a fun night out.

Grace and peace, Alan

GLOBAL PRAYER FOCUS
INDIA

The monsoon has finally arrived in India, and with it an end to the high temperatures, and relief for farmers around the country who have been waiting for rain. The last 2 years have seen low rainfall, so a good monsoon season will help farmers. The life of the poor in India, both those in rural areas and those in the large slums of the cities, is difficult and fragile. Pray for India – that there would be Good News for the poor – a life full of hope and joy and a chance to grow and thrive. Our team in India are continuing their language study, and have started to make good connections with people in their neighbourhood. Pray that they would persevere with their language study, be able to take risks, and use their new language skill to build deeper relationships. Pray as they make friends and get to know their neighbourhood, that God would give them wisdom to know how to work with the local community to bring new things. Pray for good insight into the culture of their neighbourhood, and for good friends who can help them understand. The children are getting used to life there, and settling in to school and kindy. Pray that they would thrive there and make good friends. At the end of August the team will host a group of 7 young adults who are going on a Global Exposure trip. Pray that God will prepare the teams hearts to hear his voice while they are in India.

Newsletter July 10 & 17

Flock to here about ‘The Good Shepherd’ this Sunday!

July 10 & 17

Kia ora and welcome

A few days ago the building on Lincoln Road (the old Bin Inn building) that we met in as a church from 1881 to 1948 was pulled down. We were able to retrieve a couple of old church windows, the corner stone and foundation stone. The stones are on display in the foyer for you to see, with photos of the ‘new’ church in 1881 and the relaying of the foundation stone. Prior to 1881 the church was situated on the north side of Lincoln Road, in 1880 they dragged the church building across to a new site on the south side. That wasn’t the last time we’d physically move either. In 1948 the Hall from the Lincoln Road site and the church from the Lyttelton Street Baptist site were transported down the road by steam tractor to our present Spreydon site. Our foyer is the original Lyttelton Street Baptist Church . I guess it shows we have always been a church on the move. Sometimes quite literally.

This year is our 150th anniversary and we are planning a fun celebration weekend of October 15 & 16. Please put the word out to friends and families who are part of our communities and have been part of our church journey. We are planning a big street party, a 150 year exhibition, a documentary of the last 25 years, celebration services on the Sunday and opportunities for specific groups to meet for a meal or afternoon tea together.

In this newsletter you will see a graph of our monthly giving. We have been prayerfully concerned about giving this year and have asked for your support and prayer too. As you will see, we are tracking in a very positive direction. We’re not quite there yet but we are very close to reaching the monthly budget target. Let’s pray next month we get there.

Over the last few weeks there has been a flurry of births. We had a new grandchild born in our lounge last weekend and it is wonderfully scary seeing this tiny one entering our world. It makes me long even more for a vibrant, relevant and missional church community for him to experience and that will shape his life and the lives of all our children.

Grace and peace
Alan

GLOBAL PRAYER FOCUS
BANGLADESH

Last Friday, July 1, twenty hostages were killed when Islamist militants stormed a cafe in Bangladeshi’s capital Dhaka on Friday. Three police also died. Although there has been an increase in attacks by Islamic extremists in recent months, this is the country’s worst terror attack. Attacks in the past have been aimed at foreigners, Buddhists, Hindus, Christians, gay activists, secular writers and Muslim academics. This most recent terrorist attack targetted a cafe popular with foreigners and all the hostages killed were foreigners. Please pray for Bangladesh – for an end to the violent attacks, and for strong voices to be heard that cry for peace and understanding between different groups in the country.

Pray for wisdom for the leaders of Bangladesh, that they would make wise and good decisions that benefit all the people of Bangladesh.

Pray for our brothers and sisters studying Bible and theology at CCTB and CDC in Bangladesh.

Pray that they would stand strong in their faith and be courageous in sharing the good news of Jesus despite the increased risks.

Newsletter June 26 & July 3

Don’t shy away from the … Tough Topics!

June 26 & July 03

Kia Ora all
This week a suicide bombing on the Jordanian border killed six Jordanian soldiers. Tuesday’s attack, the first of its kind since the conflict in Syria began in 2011, saw a lorry full of explosives driven at high speed over the border from Syria and blown up beside a Jordanian military post. Jordan has responded by closing its borders leaving tens of thousands of Syrian refugees fleeing ISIS stranded. In part, Jordan made this decision to protect its troops at the only border crossing that had remained open. Today 20% of the population in Jordan is Syrian. This doesn’t count the Iraqi and Palestinian refugees that have also sought sanctuary in Jordan. The King of Jordan says 25% of the state budget is being spent on helping refugees and the country is under real strain. Here in New Zealand we are the 87th country in the world, in terms of the number of refugees per head of population. Five times fewer than Australia per head of population and 47 times fewer than Sweden. Having met a few of these refugees, it breaks my heart to hear what is happening and the refugees that I met were wonderful people, many are fellow Christians. It would be a privilege to have them as neighbours.

Plans for our 150th celebration are well under way. At the moment we are collecting photos and memorabilia for an exhibit during our celebrations. If you would like to help with the exhibit please leave your details at the church office for Michelle Ritchie who will then be in contact with you. We are planning to set up a meeting of interested people to help bring the exhibit together.

Thank you to those who have been following our financial situation, praying and perhaps giving, starting to give, or re-adjusting their giving. In May we saw the beginnings of what we pray is a positive trend. At one level our tithes and giving are part of a healthy Christian life and at a church level we are dependent on the financial ownership and sacrificial support of everyone involved. Year to date our giving is 12% behind budget. Would you please prayerfully reconsider your financial giving to the church. At our last Elders meeting we decided; to reduce expenditure by 5%, communicate this to the church and ask the church to pray that we can lift giving by $10,000 a month or $2,500 a week. That equates to $2 a week per person attending our gatherings. We hugely appreciate the sacrificial giving of so many and ask that we all reconsider our financial participation in the life and mission of the church. There is a graph showing our financial situation in this newsletter.

It is great to be back and re-immersed in the life of the church here. This is such a great community of communities with people serving God’s world through their vocations, ministries and neighbourhood communities, as well as by serving in the life of the church, as trustees on ministries, local schools and community groups. Love being part of it!

This week we require creamed rice, canned peas & corn, 2 minute noodles, biscuits and long life milk. Thankyou, Sheryl.LEADERSHIP

The above graph shows our monthly giving to May. May’s giving showed some upward lift; for which we are very grateful. The Elders looked at this closely at their meeting on Tuesday night. We are praying that we can do two things to enable us to meet budget. Firstly a 5% reduction of spending and then asking the church to pray and reconsider giving with the prayer goal of lifting our giving by $10,000 a month (or $2500 a week). Please pray with us.

GLOBAL PRAYER FOCUS
CHAD

The country of Chad in North-central Africa is facing significant challenges due to ongoing drought, water shortages, and large numbers of refugees arriving from neighbouring countries fleeing war and terrorism. At present there are around 400 000 refugees in Chad. Now is the time that the rains should be beginning – pray for a good wet season, that crops would grow and food and water would be plentiful. Pray for the leaders of the region, that they would be able to work together to find solutions to terrorism, to provide for refugees, and to work for peace.
Right now the Muslim community around the world is observing Ramadan – a time to reflect on their life and faith. Pray that many would be drawn to seek truth during this time and that journey would lead them to Jesus. We have people working in two regions in Chad. Diane is involved in translation work with a group in Southern Chad. She will return to Chad in July after a short break away. The W family work in the north and are currently at home following the birth of Hannah in February. Pray for God’s strength and encouragement to be with them all.

The Good Shepherd – The Prophets Predict

Readings for this week June 20 – 24

Click Here for a pdf of this week’s readings

Good Shepherd Cover front

Day 1  – When the Job’s Not Done

Silence, Stillness and Centering before God (2 minutes)

Scripture Reading – Jeremiah 23:1-2
Last week we focused on Psalm 23 with its beautiful imagery of the Lord as a kind and caring shepherd leading his flock into green pastures and providing still waters to nourish them. We are comfortable and comforted by the idea of a gentle, loving God who offers protection and guidance. Therefore, it may jar our sensibilities to turn to Jeremiah and sense the anger with which God addresses those put in authority over his people. Throughout the Old Testament the image of sheep and shepherds appears regularly, with shepherd (or shepherdess) refered to approximately 100 times. Sheep were vitally important in the nomadic and agricultural life of the Hebrews, and it is the qualities of both sheep and shepherds which lend themselves to illustrate spiritual truths.

In the Middle East sheep are not fenced or left to fend for themselves. They are dependent creatures, singularly unintelligent and prone to wonder. A shepherd was necessary for protection, grazing, watering, shelter and tending to injuries. Even today Eastern shepherds can divide flocks which have mingled at a well by calling along, as the sheep know the voice and authority of their shepherd. Shepherds were figures of authority and leadership, and both civil and religious leaders were pictured as shepherds.

Through his prophet God addresses those who had leadership and authority over his people. They had a job to do, and it was not being done. Not only were they negligent, but under their watch the flock had become scattered and were being destroyed. God’s people, his flock, were wandering away from him and suffering the consequences. The lack of responsibility on the part of those with authority had devestating consequences for the weak and vulnerable.

Question to Consider
Ponder carefully where your lack of care and responsibility may harm others.

Prayer
Heavenly Father, you have not created us to live in a vacuum. Help me to take seriously my responsibilities and be aware of how my behaviour affects other, Amen.

Conclude with Silence (2 minutes)

Day 2  – Angry God

Silence, Stillness and Centering before God (2 minutes)

Scripture Reading – Jeremiah 23:1-4
What do we do with an angry God? This isn’t the Shepherd cradling the little lamb and carrying it on his shoulders. Actually, it is the same image of God as shepherd. The shepherd carried two tools; a staff, with the familiar crook, to guide and direct the sheep, and the rod, which was a heavier club like implement, with which to drive off wild animals and protect the sheep. A large part of the shepherd’s role was to stand up against attackers, be they animal or human. At times force would be necessary to protect the wellbeing of the flock.

We need to see that God’s anger and resolute action against those who should have been protecting his people, is telling us something about the strength of God’s feeling and care for us. He will not stand by and allow injustice and neglect to go unchecked. Whether we are comfortable with it or not, anger is sometimes exactly the correct response when God’s will is being ignored. It is all too easy for us to let anger take us down inappropriate paths; overreacting, bitter criticism, even violence. But mistreatment of those who deserve protection should elicit appropriate anger that prompts us to put things right.

In the end God says that he himself will put things right. He will not stand by and allow his people to become isolated, fearful or terrified. This should bring us great comfort, knowing we have a God ready to act on our behalf.

Questions to Consider
How do I feel about anger? Have I been taught it is wrong?
Can I hold together an image of God as loving, and at times angry?
What issues around me might deserve being angry about, because God is also angry about them?
When have I sensed God acting as a shepherd in my life?

Prayer
Loving God, help me to see you as the completely just and all wise God. Thank you that you stand on the side of the downtrodden. Help me to honestly face injustice and hurt in our world and respond as you would have me do, Amen.

Conclude with Silence (2 minutes)

Day 3  – The Prophets Predict

Silence, Stillness and Centering before God (2 minutes)

Scripture Reading – Jeremiah 23:5-8

God used his prophets to call his people back to the covenant relationship he had made with them. Often they had hard messages that shone a light on the wrongs going on in society or how idolatry was creeping into their hearts. But at times the prophets also shone a light forward into the future. In this chapter God has voiced his displeasure with the people charged with caring for others. He has said that he will step in and put right what has gone wrong. Now God is hinting at an even greater promise; a ‘righteous branch’, a king who will perfectly fulfil the role of shepherd and “do what is just and right in the land.” ‘Branch’ is a messianic title and The Targum, an ancient Aramaic paraphrase uses the word ‘Messiah’ here. This is one of the most important passages in Jeremiah that points to the coming of Jesus.

The shepherd theme begins early in Genesis., Abraham, Issac, Moses, and Amos were all shepherds. The lover in Song of Songs is pictured as a shepherd. King David is perhaps the idealised figure of the Shepherd/King. Yet all these point towards the coming of Jesus,  as the Good Shepherd. Passages like this indicate that God acts with great purpose. His will is not to be thwarted. And while he has used mighty leaders, prophets and kings, all these are a mere shadow of what God will fulfil in his Son, Jesus the Shepherd/King.

Questions to Consider
Why do you think God hints are what he will do in the future throughout the prophets? What might this accomplish in the readers?

Prayer
Lord God, thank you for pictures throughout the Bible which help me understand more of your nature. Thank you that you always made provision for your people, which gives me confidence that I can trust you to also look after me. Please help me this week to meditate on my relationship with you as my shepherd so that I might know you more, know how much I am loved, and grow to love you more deeply, Amen.

Day 4 – Changing Times

Silence, Stillness and Centering before God (2 minutes)

Scripture Reading – Ezekiel 34:1-16
Some 15 or more years after Jeremiah’s message to unfaithful shepherds, God’s people have been banished to Babylon. The image of the flock ‘scattered’ reflects the devastating exile that took God’s people away from their land. A new prophet, Ezekiel, brings the message again. Leaders had profited themselves (eating…clothing themselves) but not seen to the care of the needy. There is special responsibility for those in positions of public authority (whether pastoral or political) to care for the powerless. We are right in expecting our leaders to uphold justice, especially for the weakest members of society. Bob Dylan’s anthem from 1964 catches the sense:

Come senators, congressmen
Please heed the call
Don’t stand in the doorway
Don’t block up the hall…
There’s a battle outside
And it is a ragin’
It’ll soon shake your windows
And rattle your walls
For the times they are a changin’.

The change that is coming is that God will take over the task of shepherding his people. “My sheep wandering over all the mountains and on every high hill” is an illusion to the sinful idolatrous worship which typically took place on ‘high places’. Neglect on the part of leaders had resulted in a physical scattering but also a spiritual wandering away from God. Leaders are to reflect God’s care for his people. This is a privilege and solemn responsibility.

Before we excuse ourselves because we are not politicians or managers, or pastors, we should think carefully about what relationships we have as leaders or carers in a more general sense. As parents we lead and guide our children. As senior employees we may hold responsibility over more junior staff. As ministry leaders we act as models for others. Do we reflect God’s care in these roles?

Question to Consider
In what ways do I have a position of overseeing or caring for others?

Prayer
Almighty God, you care for your people by providing and empower others to act in your name as shepherd/leaders. I ask you to bless..(name)… in their role. Amen.

Conclude with Silence (2 minutes)

Day 5  – Character of the Shepherd

Silence, Stillness and Centering before God (2 minutes)

Scripture Reading – Exekiel 34:17-31
What does this shepherd imagery teach us about God?

1.       God pays attention. He is not oblivious to the wrongs in our world or the personal injustices and hurts we suffer.

2.       God acts. “I myself will search for my sheep.” God will do what it takes to reach people who are far from him.

3.       God prepares for our needs. He speaks of rich pasture, safe places to sleep and showers of blessings.

4.       God heals. “I will bind up the injured and strengthen the weak.”

5.       God established peace. God will remove threats of danger, but also he offers his covenant of peace – reconciliation to right relationship with himself.

6.       God builds community. In the picture of gathering his people who have been scattered he is recreating a viable community.

7.       God puts right. Justice is the climatic idea here. Not only does God provide care, but he addresses the issues that contributed to injury in the first place. There is balance between individual need and societal concerns. The shepherd who does not neglect a jagged fencepost or dangerous pothole may save on vet bills and prevent a great deal of suffering for his flock.

Finally God’s love and care for his people becomes a beacon of hope for the nations. God’s fidelity will be the greatest witness to the world. We are known, we belong, and we are loved.

“You are my sheep, the sheep of my pasture, and I am you God.”

Question to Consider
What aspect of knowing God as the Good Shepherd speaks most to you today?
Is there someone in need for whom one of these insights might bring comfort?

Prayer
Father God, Shepherd of my Soul. Help me hold on to one of these aspects of your care for me this week. Let it enrich my relationship with you and deepen my trust in you for the future, Amen.

Newsletter June 12 & 19

Come and pray together!

June 12 & 19

Kia Ora everyone

This weekend is the 40-hour-famine. The money this year is going to support refugees from Syria and Iraq who are now in Jordan. Visit www.worldvision.org.nz/40-hour-famine for more details. Sponsoring someone is a great investment and for every $1 given it will be matched by the NZ government. I was standing in a refugee camp last week and saw the fresh water system, toilet and shower blocks, kindergarten and safe places for children that were being created by World Vision for the refugees. So for $1 given, you can know $2 will reach those in real need, you’ll get 33 cents back as a tax refund and you will be encouraging a young person here to develop a heart for the poor of the world. That is an outstanding investment on a coin from your pocket or purse!

This Wednesday night is our church prayer meeting for this term – 7.30pm in the Lyttelton St Auditorium. This will be a time of prayer around where we’re at as a church; what’s happening, what needs to happen and what could happen… it would be great to have your informed prayer on the night and in the weeks ahead.

It’s good to be back. Over the last two weeks Chris, my son, and I have been in Israel, the West Bank and Jordan. It was a wonderful time, a sad time and a devastating time. I will write some more on this for my blog over the next couple of days, but for now it is great to be back with our community and with you all. Next weekend we will start two new series. In the mornings we will look at the 1,000 year journey where God describes himself as the good shepherd from Psalm 23 to 2 Peter and at night some of the tough topics that we are all questioned on. Next Sunday night we will confront the question – ‘Is Jesus the Only Way?’ These nights are designed to bring friends and neighbours to.

GLOBAL PRAYER FOCUS
Papua New Guinea

Over the last few months we have prayed for rain to fall in PNG, as they were facing drought at the beginning of the year. Thanks so much for your prayers – it has started raining and the worst of the drought is over. Continue to pray for the country as they recover and rebuild after this disaster. The government of PNG is facing economic difficulties and some loss of confidence in the government. Next year there will be an election, so there are lots of confrontations and allegations in the lead up to that. Pray for the government and opposition in PNG. Pray that they would be concerned for the people of PNG, rather than for their own position and power. Pray for a good government for this country.

Phil and Chris Carr are our partners working with the Bamu people in PNG, although at present they are in Christchurch. They work with a team of local guys translating the Bible. They report that the current heavy rains mean that solar-powered computers are not working well! Despite drought and rain, the team have completed a draft of Romans and are working on Hebrews. Pray that the completed scriptures would be well received by the people and bring hope and life to the Bamu people.

SWBC Newsletter May 29 & June 5

The best things in life are Free!

May 29 & June 5

As I write this I am still very mindful of Ted Wiggins’ funeral on Monday, it was one of those funerals that was both sad and uplifting, one that reflects a life well lived with the Lord and with others.  I am deeply grateful for his life which has impacted mine, and all of us here as part of South West. Our thoughts and prayers continue to be with family and friends.

One ministry Ted used to lead while he was on the pastoral team was Alpha, and it is wonderful to see this ministry enjoy the beginnings of a renaissance.  These first 3 Tuesday nights have been very encouraging. I would like to thank all the amazing volunteers who popped up to serve behind the scenes to make it such a hospitable place to chat about Jesus and the questions of life.  You should see the team work on Tuesday nights aye – inspirational.

Really looking forward to Gabbi Bisley’s baptism this Sunday night too. Gabbi is an active and vital member of our church and it is exciting to see her make this public step, it’s a life long one.  Yahoo!

Finally, I have been dwelling on Isaiah 40 over the last couple of weeks, and it includes “Those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength, they will soar on wings like eagles”.  And soaring sure beats flapping aye!

Let’s continue to put our hope in the Lord, stretch out in him and allow his power to be at work in and through us.

Duane

GLOBAL PRAYER FOCUS
INDIA
Although most of India is still having heat waves and drought, a tropical cyclone in the Bay of Bengal has brought record breaking rainfall to West Bengal, dropping temperatures into the mid-30s, which local papers call “pleasant” and “comfortable”. This is not supposed to last long, though! Our team in India write: “Apparently it is the hottest spring here since 1954, so at least we have fair cause to be feeling hot! Despite that, things are still ticking along albeit at a slightly slower pace!  Our language is continuing to build (we all passed our uni tests!) and we are always attempting to use it out and about in the community. We are spending more time with those down the canal community and building some really positive and potentially important relationships there. It feels like we have a number of balls in the air relating to business ideas, projects and spaces, and at the moment we are just keeping those all in the air till we are more certain of our future direction.”

Pray for stamina and good humour for the team as they adjust to the heat and humidity.  Pray for their continuing development as a team and as a global site, and that they would build good relationships with key people in their community.
